Brooklyn CollegePrincipal Investigators: Elizabeth Sklar, Ira Rudowsky, Gerald Weiss
Bio: Elizabeth Sklar is an Associate Professor in the Computer and Information Science department at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY). She received her PhD in Computer Science from Brandeis University, after working at MIT/Lincoln Lab for nearly 10 years as a scientific programmer. Dr Sklar was a non-tenure track faculty member in the Computer Science department at Columbia University for 4 years before taking her present position at Brooklyn College in 2005. Her research interests include interactive learning systems, multiagent simulation of learning environments, and educational robotics. She is a PI or Co-PI on multiple grants from the National Science Foundation and the US Department of Education, all of which center around learning and interaction, in humans and/or multiagent systems; and she is actively involved in outreach efforts. Dr Sklar has published nearly 100 papers in refereed conferences, workshops and journals. She received the RoboCup Scientific Challenge Award in 2002 for her work on evaluating the effectiveness of educational robotics. She is a founding chair of RoboCupJunior, an international educational robotics initiative, and has served on program and organizing committees for many international AI-related conferences. She is on the board of Trustees for the RoboCup Federation and on the advisory board for the Institute for Personal Robotics in Education (IPRE).
Bio: Ira Rudowsky is an Associate Professor in the Computer and Information Science department at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY). He received his PhD in Computer Science from City University of New York. Overall, he has twenty-five years of industry experience in such companies as The New York City-RAND Institute, The New York State Comptrollerís Office, The Hertz Corp., Bankers Trust and Merrill Lynch. He gained an expertise in a wide variety of computer architectures, operating systems, programming languages, tools and design techniques. By sharing his experiences with his students he hopes to connect theory to application and the classroom to the real-world. His current research focuses on developing a web-enabled, intelligent user interface to an XML database application that uses reinforcement learning techniques and semantic web technologies to promote a model of scientific data sharing. The goal is to broaden innovations in science, informatics and the treatment of disorders. He is also coPI on an NSF Broadening Participation in Computation grant that seeks to increase the recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups into Computer Science. He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, IEEE Computer Society and the Association for Information Systems.
