Upcoming Workshops
2009 is the last funded year for both kinds of workshops, described further below. Media Computation workshops are open primarily to University and College computing faculty, and First Courses workshops are open to all computer science teachers. Workshops are open to all computing faculty of all levels.
- SIGCSE 2010 Preconference Workshop, March 10, 2009: Media Computation (http://www.mediacomputation.org) is an approach to teaching introductory computing where the focus is on manipulating pictures, sounds, and video. The approach motivates and engages students, by contextualizing computing in a relevant activity. The one-day pre-conference workshop is appropriate for both novices to Media Computation and those using the approach now. The day will offer an overview of the approach, touching on use with Python, Java, and Alice, for both introductory (APCS or CS1) and data structures classes. Brief Description of Workshops
- Introduction to Media Computation Workshop (sponsored by NSF CCLI Program): This workshop will introduce faculty to teaching with the Media Computation approach. We will cover introduction to computing in Python (updated for the new Second Edition book) and in Java, and data structures in Java, using an approach that emphasizes relevance and creativity. We'll add a brief introduction to Alice + MediaComputation in 2009.
- Engaging First Courses Workshop (sponsored by NSF BPC Program): A whirlwind introduction to FIVE new approaches for teaching introductory courses in computing that engage students and help to broaden participation in computing: (1) Introduction to Media Computation in Python, (2) and in Java, (3) Introduction to Data Structures with Media Computation in Java, (4) Introduction to Engineering Computing using MATLAB, and (5) Introduction to computing using robotics using Python.

- June 1-2, 2009 Workshop on "Engaging First Courses" at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, sponsored by Monica Brockmeyer, Associate Professor of Computer Science.
- August 3-4, 2009 Workshop on "Engaging First Courses" at Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
- August 5-7, 2009 Workshop on "Media Computation" at Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

- Will you need a laptop at the workshop, or will you be bringing one? All workshops are hands-on.
- Do you require accommodations at the workshop, or will you be commuting in each day?
All these workshops are free to faculty, with travel stipends ($200/person) and room and meals included, as well as a CD with all software.
