ACM Ed Board: Future of Computing Education Summit

FCE Summit Attendees (original list)

The Future of Computing Education Summit is a meeting of representatives from major computing professional organizations with an interest in improving computing education. In many disciplines, professional organizations take a leadership position in addressing the concerns of education in the profession. The goals for the Summit are:
  • A consensus view of the challenges facing Computing Education.
  • A shared set of strategies for addressing these challenges.
  • Plans for coordinated effort for implementing these strategies.

Agenda for Future of Computing Education Summit

June 25-26, 2009
Washington, D.C.

Overview of Summit Structure On Thursday, we're planning three rounds of breakout groups:
  • First group is around Challenges, drawn from the challenges identified in the groups' position papers: Diversity, Revising Curriculum, Professional Development and Lifelong Learning, Attractive and Inviting Pedagogy, Defining Computing, and Promoting Computing (e.g., Public Policy, Mass Media). The Challenges groups are asked to develop the list of challenges identified in the position papers under their category, and to begin to identify how we might respond.
  • Second round of breakouts is around Strategies groups. The planning committee will meet over lunch, after hearing the Challenges breakout reports, and will create a set of Strategies groups. We'll have to see what comes out of the groups, but possible ones we can imagine include "Industrial-Academic Collaborations," or "Conferences" and "Meetings," or "New Funding." The Strategies group flesh out the strategies and figure out what the professional societies might actually do.
  • Third round of breakouts will be around the same themes as Strategies, but the goal now is to identify explicit Actions. What might we do to implement the strategies to solve the challenges?

On Friday, we list the Actions around the room, then let people vote as representatives of their organizations. One color will represent "My organization will own this action item" and another will represent "My organization will participate in this action item." The top vote-getting action items will be our goals. The final session on Friday will be about Coordination – how will we make sure that the action items get done, and how do coordinate effort going forward?
