U-8 Girls, Fall 2005

Coach Mark Guzdial: My home phone is 770-621-9770 and work is 404-894-5618.

Practice is ON

(I'll try to update this page ON/OFF in case of rain, in case you're wondering about practice and can't get a hold of me.)
You can also check the TYSA site at for site openings/closing.

Practices are Tuesday/Thursday 5-6 pm at Livsey Elementary.

  • Cleats
  • Shin guards (must be under socks)
  • Water bottle. It's way too hot out there not to have a water bottle – it's a health risk.
  • Ball
(Uniform shirts will be available at the first game, if you don't already have one.)

  • Please come to games 15 minutes early to warm up and to let the ref check the team for shin guards and no jewelry. If you must keep earrings in, cover them with bandages so that ball-to-ear accidents don't cause puncture wounds.
  • If you bring snack, the U-8 coaches and commissioner are asking you to bring an extra snack for the girls to offer to the Ref. We had a lot of problems last weekend with refs taking criticism, and we're going to start a campaign to show them extra respect. Thanks!

Coach's Philosophy

My goal for the team is for every member of the team to end the season excited about soccer and planning to play TYSA soccer again. I'm not focused on winning – that's the wrong focus for the U-8 league. Instead, our focus will be on having fun and being competitive enough to stay challenged and motivated. I am more interested in everyone getting a chance to shine and feel excited about soccer, then playing only the strongest players in order to win games.

My coaching style is based on what U-8 players are developmentally capable of:
  • Few U-8 players will pass the ball. To anyone. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America encourages a focus at this age on ball handling, dribbling, and shooting.
  • U-8 soccer isn't just about soccer, it's about physical fitness. For example, 6 to 8 year olds are developing a more sophisticated sense balance at this age. So some of our practice activities will be about fitness and developing their physical abilities.
  • I will try hard not to ever use lines or laps, and will instead encourage the players to be moving around and touching the ball for most of the practice time.

Requests for Parents

  • Please do come to games and cheer us on! Please be encouraging, but try to refrain from giving specific coaching commands. One of the goals of U-8 soccer is for the players to become more independent and think about the game on their own – that's one of the reasons why the coaches are prohibited from entering the field and must remain in the coach's box during the game. Try to let your players figure out what they're supposed to be doing.
  • Please do pick up your daughter on-time after practice.
  • Please be kind to our referees. In U-8, we tend to get the first-timer refs, who are very easily intimidated by adults arguing with them. Too many of our referees don't return after the first game. Let's be encouraging to our refs and get them to develop with our program.
