AP Data for the United States-1998-2014The following file is a spreadsheet with all the data for the number of CS AP A exam taken in each state from 1998 to 2014. The data was complied from the data available at http://research.collegeboard.org/programs/ap/data. This data was originally gathered by the CSTA board, but Barb Ericson of Georgia Tech keeps adding to it each year.

Nationally 37,327 students took the AP CS A exam in 2014. This was a big increase (26.29%) from the 29,555 students who took it in 2013. The number of teachers who passed the audit was 2,525 versus 2,252 the previous year. The number of female exam takers was 7,458 which was up from 5,485 the year before. The number of black students was 1,469 which was an increase from 1,090 the previous year. The number of Hispanic students was 3,270 up from 2,408 the previous year.
The pass rate ranged from 34.5% in Arkansas with 56 students passing out of 161 to 83.333% in New Hampshire with 90 out of 108 students passing the exam with a score of 3 or higher.
The percentage female was 20% which was an increase from the previous year 18.55%.
The overall pass rate was 61% which was down from 66.85% the previous year.
The female pass rate was 57% which was down from 62% the year before.
The black pass rate was 33.35% which was down from 35.59% the year before.

As you can see California had a 34% increase from 2013 to 2014 in the number of students taking the exam. Florida jumped from number 8 to number 4 with a 39% increase in the number of students taking the exam. Maryland has surprisingly little growth from 2013 and dropped from number 5 to number 8 with less than 1% increase. Virginia dropped from 4th to 5th even though they had a 25% increase in the number of students taking the exam.

Eighteen states had less than 100 people take the AP CS A exam in 2014, with Wyoming still the only state with no students taking the exam.
Only 8 states had a decrease in the number of students taking the AP CS A exam from the previous year: Oregon, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Kansas, Montana, Arkansas, West Virginia, and Maine.
