It seems to me that a large problem with most projects that try to start off with learner's interests is that these interests are usually terribly inappropriate to look at. While I agree with statements such as "an interest is a terrible thing to waste," I worry that we often think of interest in too simple or perverse a way. I may like watching NFL football, but I don't see using that interest as a way to further any learning goals. That interest is not a constructive interest for learning. I have many other interests that are much more constructive and therefore much more useful as learning interests.
