This week in Ubicomp

Edit This week Ubicomp here.

Erich: 2/6/2009 - This past week: working on writing the proposal document. The key aspects of my thesis will be:
  • Wideband positioning and characterizing the powerline as a transmitter.
  • Using the powerline as a receiver to reverse the PLP solution.
  • A user-focused site-survey tool. This work will be sent to UbiComp in April, and I have been discussing this project with Yi and Sidhant as collaborators.
  • Backup option: A MIMO-like approach using multiple antennas in the tag to alleviate the effect of receiver orientation on signal strength variation.

Lana asks: Is this supposed to be about the past week or the coming week?
Last week + weekend:
  • Pitched the eMutts as a possible project to Jay's 3651 class
  • Re-writing ShareTable paper for IDC (due 1/22)
  • Moved out of my apartment and almost entirely packed for Netherlands
  • Handling logistics of Netherlands: getting some documents, housing arrangements, emailing some students in my new lab
  • Refactored two classes in the ShareTable code
  • Passed on responsibility for coordinating women@cc (to the awesome Fatima!)
  • Looked through a bunch of existing psychology instruments for families. After much trial and error figure out the best process for this: (1) find a book of instrument abstracts (e.g. Handbook of Family Measurement Techniques), (2) look through an note anything that looks useful, (3) compare the validity, reliability, sample questions for instruments you may want to use, (4) check if full text of instrument is published online or in a database somewhere, (5) if not (don't attempt to get to through NAPS – pretty much impossible, nowadays), contact the author directly via email requesting the full text of the instrument.
This week plans:
  • Finish and submit IDC paper
  • Finish refactoring ShareTable code
  • Speak at the AwareHome about ShareTable on Friday (11:30-1)
  • Interview with MSR for summer internship Friday (2:30)
  • Continue working on rewrite of Activities paper for Interact (deadline Jan 30th)
  • Continue working to make sure that Shashank and Shreyansh are set up with their projects while I'm gone
